Meet Dr. Milescu
Founder/Director of Serenity Now Yoga & Holistic Wellness Center
Her evolution down the path to Health and Wellness started very early in her life. All roads have led her to the current path of the Yoga lifestyle of daily Yoga, eating healthy, and having a vivacious zest for living life. Living life fully and enjoying every moment, an aspect that has arisen out of her daily yoga practice.
Dr. Milescu is the grand daughter of a very old spiritual and original Christian Eastern Orthodox clergy, and the daughter of Romanian parents with a family business of owning a gymnastics school. You can say the components are there in the genes having trained as a competitive gymnast in her formative years and reached the peak elite level; she received a scholarship to college for gymnastics. The spiritual aspect has been planted early as a seed in childhood and was cultivated gently without any dogma or rules, understanding that it is a life long path. Her injuries as a gymnast sidelined her permanently and so she was determined to become a Physician and seek sports injuries as part of her specialization. She liked Podiatry having been injured herself, and seeing many runners’ dancers’ and gymnasts with such problems, it was a great fit at that time. .
Eight years later, going through Hofstra University, and then moving on to the New York College of Podiatric Medicine, and ending with a three-year residency, she graduated with all her studies in 1998 as a Podiatric Physician and Foot Surgeon with extensive wound care knowledge. She served the indigent community in the Bronx at St. Barnabas hospital fraught with obesity related diabetes and subsequent sequelae of diabetic foot wounds and amputations. This disturbed her and she noticed how important it is to keep the body fit and trim. The lack of exercise, unhealthy lifestyle (excessive alcohol & smoking), diet, and a careless attitude about “Self” inevitably leads to High Blood Pressure, Diabetes, High Cholesterol, Obesity, Strokes and Heart Attacks..
In 1997 she married an E.R. Physician of Indian Descent allowing more exposure to Eastern philosophy. This eventually led to more exposure on the increasing popularity of the benefits of Yoga. She and her husband have both embraced Eastern Orthodox Christianity, and parallel to this spiritual evolution she fell in love with Yoga..
Yoga has been around for 5,000 years a practice that establishes the connection of healthy Body Mind and Spirit. This really resonated well with her. .
The development of a strong body balanced equally with an agile body, the focus and concentration required in each yoga practice to achieve challenging “Asanas “(Yoga poses or postures), connecting the breathe with movement, learning “Pranayama” (Breathe Exercises) and finally what she needed most with raising three children and a Podiatric practice: “quieting the racing mind cluttered with to do lists”! .
This can be achieved at the end of the Yoga practice, which is called “ Yoga Nidra”. It involves “PMR”, guided by the Yoga teacher, it stands for Progressive Muscle Relaxation”, next is Guided imagery and Visualization to a created place of serenity and peace, and finally, ending with silent meditation techniques that help calm and focus the mind. What occurs spontaneously in some is “bliss” that endorphin release “ happy hormones, it is the “soul” or “spirit” within us all that is always peaceful. This sense of contentment and awakening to the present moment is what leads people closer to that connection they can explain other then connecting with their inner “bliss”. In actuality it is our spirit we are all Divine Light and we become whole when we awaken to uplift our spirit. All worldly worries and concerns melt away, even if it for but a brief moment in time. It is what we all seek “serenity now”..
Yoga gives a quote at the end of each practice that is uplifting philosophical and perhaps positive affirmations. Dr. Milescu states that certain clients of many faiths Christian, Jewish, and Muslim are afraid to start Yoga falsely believing we slip into Hinduism and chants to God’s. We are not in India! So far from the truth she states! Often times, fears from some Fundamental Faiths of certain denominations arise by mislead clergy which state that Yoga lead people astray from their Faith. .
Dr. Milescu states that the top of the tree branches of Christianity is Orthodox Christian and Catholic. Those Nuns and Monks still Meditate to this day. They also Chant to this day. This is spiritual practice that Westerner’s along the way of separating into many denominations, have sadly lost this ancient tradition that is a helpful technique to quiet the mind. It is said that when we are quiet in Meditation; God speaks to us. When we pray. we speak to God!.
Dr. Milescu attests that she has more faith now then when she first started practicing Yoga. There are also many in Yoga practitioner’s who have been Agnostic or even Atheist. She states to take note: Yoga does not profess to any religion or God as such; atheists may practice it. Therefore anyone can do Yoga of any Faith, Culture, Age, Body Constitution and Commitment level. It is a stereotype to believe that one must be a “pretzel” to do Yoga. Dr. Milescu offers every level even Chair Yoga!.
Yoga is simply a 5,000-year-old system of health designed to create a healthy body, a mind sharp and focused and a happy content spirit!.
The spiritual aspect may still be controversial but Dr. Milescu insists having first hand knowledge of what Hinduism is and having been trained in the Yoga teachings’, it just happens to have developed in a predominantly Hindu nation of India..
It is a philosophy and blueprint on a way of life whereby the spirituality may with some never connect with a few people and remain at the physical and mental level, or it may further evolve to having more Faith in whatever that individual’s belief system is practiced in their life..
Dr. Milescu has been in Podiatric practice from 1998 to the present. One day in May of 1997 her life completely changed by being rear-ended in a car accident. This sidelined her from practice. Her Physician’s told her it would take her at least 6-8 months before she could return to the OR and perform surgery. However with Chiropractic, Acupuncture, Massage and Physical Therapy she healed faster having been already in good physical shape. Yoga practice began early in her regimen..
She returned to work in seven weeks! This inspired her to officially go back to school and earn her certification as a Yoga Teacher. Prior to the accident, she remained active in Dance Pilates and Yoga, but only Yoga gave her that dose of managing pain through breathe and releasing fears through relaxation technique’s known to Yoga. What seemed like a negative event turned into the best thing in her life, the love of teaching Yoga! She was inspired and also encouraged and supported by her husband and three children to go to Yoga school!.
She earned her 200- hour Yoga Certification at Red Sun Yoga under the tutelage of Jeannie Laslo. She taught as many classes as possible with her busy Podiatry practice and three children. She has earned over 1,500 hours of teaching along with presently moving on to study with School Yoga Institute at the master level 500-hour teacher training. She previously learned Hatha Yoga with an Integral Yoga Influence. .
Currently with School Yoga Institute she is practicing Sadhana Hatha Flow (Sivananda style) and Sadhana Vinyasa Flow (Ashtanga style). Dr. Milescu embraces all styles of Hatha Yoga and so she has cherry picked the most creative and professional set of Yoga teacher’s at her new studio now open 10 months!.
She named the studio after the Seinfeld episode: “Serenity Now”. Being a native New Yorker she understands how we all yearn and seek some “serenity’ in our lives. Her space is peaceful, and decorated in a very tranquil and inviting manner so conducive to creating a pleasant spa like experience! She also honors her original training and understands the art of movement, which uplifts the spirit! Her motto: “ Seeking Serenity through the Art of Breathe and Movement” is not exclusive to the art form of Yoga. .
She honors all Movement arts. She keeps it fresh in her studio so that the body is used in different ways, (muscle confusion leads to greater fitness and weight loss). One’s spirit can be uplifted through Dance surely we see it in certain churches’! Feel great, lose weight, and enjoy breath and movement. One can choose Yoga or Dance many ways to Health and Wellness!.
In the past, the studio offered Lyrical Dance, Contemporary, African dance Bollywood (Modern Indian Dance)..
Currently, the studio offers other than many Yoga classes: Belly Dancing, Zumba, Samba, Jazz, Ballet, Ballet Stretch, and Dance Workout (Combo Ballet & Contemporary). Finally saving the best for last: our most recent, and popular class is Pilates Fusion, a combination of Ballet Barre work to strengthen the legs and Spine while creating flexibility, followed by Ballet floor work and mat Pilates..
The studio has over 12 active instructors, and another 6 on sub list ready to create movement, grace, and uplifting the spirit through Dance not to ever down play our staple and main component on the class schedule Yoga..
Dr. Milescu knows that there are many paths to Health and Wellness, so she loves creativity and honors all Yoga traditions while presenting an eclectic mix of Fitness Healing classes that are hard to find in one location. As for spirituality it is optional! It is given in small doses that may be completely embraced or ignored. She quotes the Father of Integral Yoga” Many Paths, One Truth”.
So if you feel inspired and motivated by Dr. Milescu’s story, at 41 she looks and feels great! She has three children, a husband and two businesses to run, yet she has endless energy works hard and attributes this to her attitude of gratitude, and her focus and determination which all developed in her formative years as an athlete, and presently as a practicing Yogini and Yoga Teacher. Her precise surgical skills transfer out of the OR with a meticulous non-stop work ethic..
She serves the elderly community by teaching chair Yoga once a week in Lake Mary, and is now determined to bring Yoga to the Hospitals where she sees her stressed out colleagues daily. They ask her why she looks so young and happy. Her answer: Yogahhhhh!.
